FSRM File Screening

File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) in Windows Server includes a file screening feature that enables administrators to block certain types of files from being stored on a file server. Here are the features, functions, and configuration options for file screening:

Features:

  1. File type screening: Administrators can specify the types of files that are not allowed to be stored on the file server. This can help prevent the spread of malware and unauthorized access to sensitive data.
  2. Folder-level screening: File screening can be applied at the folder level, allowing administrators to block certain file types from being stored in specific folders.
  3. Notifications: Administrators can configure email notifications to be sent when a user attempts to store a blocked file on the file server.
  4. Reporting: FSRM includes reporting capabilities that provide administrators with information on which files have been blocked and by whom.

Functions:

  1. File screening templates: FSRM includes predefined file screening templates for common file types such as executables, scripts, and multimedia files. Administrators can customize these templates or create their own templates.
  2. Custom file groups: Administrators can create custom file groups based on file extensions or keywords. For example, a custom file group could be created for files with the extension “.mp3”.
  3. Exclusion rules: Administrators can create exclusion rules to allow certain file types to be stored on the file server. For example, an exclusion rule could be created to allow a specific executable file to be stored.
  4. Quotas: Administrators can configure quotas on file screening to limit the amount of disk space that can be used by certain file types.

Configuration:

  1. Enable File Screening: First, enable the file screening feature in FSRM.
  2. Create a File Screen Template: Create a file screen template, which can be based on predefined templates or customized to meet specific needs.
  3. Apply the File Screen to a Folder: Apply the file screen to the desired folder or folders where the blocked file types should not be stored.
  4. Configure Notifications: Configure email notifications to be sent to designated recipients when a user attempts to store a blocked file on the file server.
  5. Create Exclusion Rules: Create exclusion rules to allow specific file types to be stored on the file server.

FSRM’s file screening feature provides a way for administrators to prevent the storage of certain types of files on a file server. It includes file type screening, folder-level screening, notifications, reporting, and other features. To use file screening, administrators must enable the feature, create a file screening template, apply the file screen to a folder, configure notifications, and create exclusion rules as necessary.
