Hyper-V DHCP Guard

Hyper-V DHCP Guard is a feature that helps to prevent unauthorized DHCP servers from assigning IP addresses to virtual machines running on a Hyper-V host. DHCP Guard can help to prevent network conflicts and improve network security.

Features and functions:

  1. Protection against rogue DHCP servers: DHCP Guard helps to prevent unauthorized DHCP servers from assigning IP addresses to virtual machines on the network.
  2. Centralized management: DHCP Guard can be centrally managed using Windows Server’s DHCP Server management tools.
  3. Granular control: DHCP Guard allows administrators to control DHCP server authorization at the subnet or port level.

Installation and configuration:

DHCP Guard is included with the Hyper-V role in Windows Server. To enable it, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Hyper-V Manager console.
  2. Select the virtual switch to which you want to add DHCP Guard.
  3. Click the “Settings” option.
  4. Choose the “Security” option.
  5. Check the “Enable DHCP Guard” box.
  6. Choose the authorization mode (e.g. allow authorized servers only).

Usage examples:

  1. Prevent unauthorized DHCP servers: By enabling DHCP Guard, administrators can help to prevent unauthorized DHCP servers from assigning IP addresses to virtual machines, which can help to prevent network conflicts and improve network security.
  2. Granular control over DHCP authorization: DHCP Guard allows administrators to control DHCP server authorization at the subnet or port level, which can be useful in large, complex networks where different departments or business units have their own DHCP servers.
  3. Centralized management: DHCP Guard can be centrally managed using Windows Server’s DHCP Server management tools, which can simplify network administration and improve network security.
