Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP)

The Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) tool is a free, agentless tool designed to simplify and streamline the IT infrastructure planning process. It is used to assess and inventory hardware and software environments, as well as to evaluate application compatibility and readiness for migration to new operating systems and cloud platforms.

Features and functions of the MAP tool include:

  1. Inventory assessment: MAP can inventory servers, workstations, devices, and software across a network to provide a comprehensive view of the IT environment.
  2. Application compatibility assessment: MAP can evaluate application compatibility with new operating systems and cloud platforms to determine if they are ready for migration.
  3. Virtualization assessment: MAP can assess the readiness of servers and applications for virtualization, as well as provide guidance on how to optimize the virtual environment.
  4. Cloud migration assessment: MAP can assess the feasibility of migrating applications and workloads to cloud platforms such as Azure.

To install and use the MAP tool, follow these steps:

  1. Download the MAP tool from the Microsoft website.
  2. Install the MAP tool on a server or workstation in the network.
  3. Launch the MAP tool and follow the prompts to configure and run the desired assessments.

For example, to assess the inventory of servers and workstations in the network, select the “Inventory” assessment and provide the necessary credentials and network information. The MAP tool will then scan the network and provide a detailed inventory report.

The MAP tool is a powerful tool that can help simplify and streamline the IT infrastructure planning process. By using MAP, IT professionals can gain a better understanding of their IT environment, assess the feasibility of migration and virtualization projects, and make more informed decisions about their IT infrastructure.
